Products having wetting, emulsifying and detergent properties are obtained by condensing a metal salt of a fatty acid having 8 to 22 carbon atoms with a sulphonate having the formula XR1SO3Me, wherein X is halogen, R1 is alkylene or hydroxyalkylene with 2 to 4 carbon atoms and Me is a metal forming a water-soluble salt, in the presence of not substantially more than an equal quantity of a reaction medium comprising an amide derived from a monobasic fatty acid having 10 to 14 carbon atoms and an alkyl primary or secondary amine in which the sum of the carbon atoms is less than 5 or ammonia, morpholine, ethanolamine or 1-amino-2 : 3-propanediol. When the amide is derived from diethyllaurylamide and ethanollaurylamide not more than 4.5 per cent of reaction medium based on the combined weight of the reactants is employed. In examples, coconut oil soap is condensed with sodium monochlorhydrin sulphonate in the presence of laurylmorpholin and butyllauramide. Oleic acid soap and stearates, palmitates and myristates may be used. Potassium and alkaline earth metal soaps are mentioned as well as the following amides: capric amide, ethyllauramide, diethylcapricamide, monopropyl and butyl capric amide, methylethyllauric amide, monoethanolamide of myristic acid and monoglycerylamide of capric acid. Chormethylpropenesulphonate, b -methylmonochlorhydrinsulphonate and chlorethylsulphonate are mentioned.
