SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR AUGMENTED REAR-VIEW DISPLAYS

A system for augmenting a rear-view display (140) in a vehicle includes a rear-view display (140), a viewpoint sensor (110), a camera (130), and a processing circuit (150) electrically coupled to the sensor (110) and the camera (130). The processing circuit includes a viewpoint sensing module (156) and an image processing module (158). The viewpoint sensing module (156) is configured estimate a viewpoint for a driver of the vehicle and estimate a reflected image visible in the rear-view display from the estimated viewpoint. The image processing module (158) is configured to align supplemental visual information from the camera with the estimated reflected image and augment the rear-view display with the supplemental visual information. The augmented display allows the driver to effectively see "through" or past opaque objects which typically obstruct the driver's view in traditional rear-view mirrors.
