The purpose of the present invention is to provide an orally administered adsorbent capable of adsorbing large quantities of tryptophan or indoxyl sulfate in the presence of bile acid. Accordingly, an orally administered adsorbent is characterized by including surface-modified spherical active carbon which has: a bulk density of 0.30-0.46 g/mL; a specific surface area obtained using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method of at least 1900 m2/g; a total acidic group content of 0.30-1.20 meq/g; and a total basic group content of 0.20-0.9 meq/g.
