The method involves sampling retention times of marking elements (160) and forming an interpolation straight line of the retention times. An angular acceleration of an output shaft (120) is determined on the basis of negative slope factor of the interpolation straight line. The interpolation straight lines are formed by linear regression, and a residue of the linear regression is provided as a measure for the quality of the determination of the torque. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a computer program product for executing the method; and (2) a device for determining the torque provided by a reciprocating piston combustion engine in a drive train.
