The internal combustion engine comprises an even number of cylinders with two diverging pistons in each cylinder, double the number of hydraulic cylinders with pistons, the rods of which are the rods of the pistons in the engine cylinders, and two hydraulic drives rotating a single shaft. Each hydraulic drive comprises a rotor and a stator with channels for supplying working fluid to, and removing working fluid from, the hydraulic cylinders in order to rotate the rotor with the shaft. The engine cylinders and the hydraulic cylinders are arranged between the stators of the hydraulic drive, parallel to the shaft.
