Provided is a manganese dioxide such that the peak intensity ratio (I&bgr;/Iγ) of the peak intensity (I&bgr;) at approximately 525cm-1, and the peak intensity (Iγ) at approximately 580cm-1, as measured in the Raman spectrum, is 0.62 or less. Further provided is an alkaline dry cell equipped with: a hollow cylindrical positive electrode which includes the manganese dioxide; a gelled negative electrode which is filled into the interior of the hollow section of the positive electrode, and includes a negative electrode active material; a separator which is disposed between the positive electrode and the gelled negative electrode; a negative electrode collector which is inserted into the gelled negative electrode; a negative electrode terminal plate which is electrically connected to the negative electrode collector; and an electrolyte.
