[Class 38(iii)] A device for automatically controlling the acceleration of electric motor-driven vehicles on starting comprises a brake adapter of the kind in which the braking- power is controlled in dependence on the vehicle-load by means of a control spring operated by a force derived from and varying with said load, and means for controlling the torque of the driving- motors which is also operated by the same control spring. Braking mechanism for a vehicle comprises a spring 3 which is deflected in accordance with the vehicle-load so as to determine the ratio between the force exerted by the brake cylinder and that transmitted to the brake shoes. A pin 11 on an arm 10, which is pivotally mounted at 9, is pressed into engagement with the spring 3, one end of the arm being formed as a contact 13 co-operating with studs 14 in the driving-motor circuit. The arm 10 occupies different positions with different vehicle loads, so adjusting the driving- torque in accordance with the vehicleloading. In a modification, Fig. 3, (not shown), a single shaft mounts a resilient arm co-operating with the control spring 3. This arm is pressed against the spring 3 by another arm on the shaft which is coupled to a spring within a fluid-containing cylinder. Movements of the shaft, which also carries the contact-arm, are therefore damped. In a further modification, Fig. 6, (not shown), the shaft is locked in the position in which it is set by the spring 3 by means of a solenoid which is energized when the vehicle is started. The solenoid may be replaced by a compressed air cylinder. The contact device may be arranged to afford a linear relation between the vehicle load and the adjusted torque.
