This organic EL element is provided with a light-emitting layer (33) between a pair of electrodes (2, 4). The light-emitting layer has a host material and a fluorescent dopant material. The (S1) energy of the host material is higher than the (S1) energy of the fluorescent dopant material, the difference between the (S1) energy of the host material and the (S1) energy of the fluorescent dopant material being 0.5 eV or less. The difference between the (S1) energy and the (T1) energy is 0.24 eV or less in the host material, which includes a predetermined compound. The host compound causes an energy transition due to reverse intersystem crossing at room temperature, and is thus capable of achieving high light-emitting efficiency. |
