The method involves generating an input signal over load plates (108, 110). The load plates are arranged at sides of a battery cell (100). An open circuit voltage of the battery cell is measured. The measured open circuit voltage is compared with a reference signal, where the reference signal comprises an open circuit voltage signal, which is assigned to the battery cell. The battery cell with error is identified based on the comparison. A difference measurement signal is generated based on the measured open circuit voltage and the reference signal. An independent claim is also included for a battery cell diagnostic system.
