The method involves cyclically alternating a propulsion system (2) when an interrupted compound of the propulsion system is switched between an unloading mode and a load mode to driving wheels (18, 19). An electric drive motor and/or electrical machine (8) are driven by a traction battery (20) in the unloading mode. Mechanical power is delivered by an energy receiving unit (30) of a vehicle. The electric machine is driven by a combustion engine (4) in the load mode. The traction battery is charged by the combustion engine. The combustion engine is driven without dragged compression.
