The device (4) has a magnet assembly (5) and/or a sensor (6) cooperating with a moving element. A relative movement between the sensor and the assembly is effected by the element such that the path and/or the position of the element are detected due to magnetic field strength detected by the sensor. The magnet assembly comprises magnets (5, 5'') that are opposite to each other in a support (7). The sensor is located in a carrier (8) between the two magnets. Movable guides (9) are adapted for the movable guidance of the support and the carrier relative to one another. An independent claim is also included for a household appliance.
