The method involves providing a quenching chamber (3) for an entrained-flow gasifier, and allowing solids e.g. ash, and charged wash water e.g. quench water, to be fed to a shared intermediate reservoir (14). The wash water from the reservoir is cooled in a wash water cooler (19) and is relaxed in a relaxation device (20) to a pressure equal to or greater than vapor pressure of the wash water, and temperature of the wash water is adjusted. Relaxed wash water (22) of a solid material separation is subjected to and returned to a wash water circuit.
