PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease a temperature of fixing members to a low temperature even in a place where image areas have a small interval, so as to improve energy saving characteristics.SOLUTION: A fixing device 12 includes fixing members 28 and 38 that are rotated while being brought into contact with an unfixed image, a pressure member 30 that forms a fixing nip part with the fixing member, heating means 56 for heating the fixing member with power from a power source 40 and having a plurality of heating areas divided in a direction orthogonal to a recording material conveyance direction, and external heating control means 42 for controlling the heating means; and passes a recording material carrying an unfixed image through the fixing nip part SN to perform fixing. The external heating control means has a heating mode of maintaining a temperature of a portion of the fixing member corresponding to a non-image area on the recording material at a temperature lower than that of a portion on the fixing member corresponding to an image area, while controlling a linear velocity of the fixing member to be slower than a normal process linear velocity, and selectively controls the respective heating areas in the heating mode on the basis of image information on the recording material. |
