The communication apparatus has an optical transmission apparatus (16a) such as a laser light source that is attached at a first wagon (12) of a rail vehicle network. An optical receiver (18a) such as a photo diode is attached at a second wagon (14) of the rail vehicle network. The optical receiver is directed towards the optical transmission apparatus so that a line of sight is provided between the optical transmission apparatus and the optical receiver for the transfer of data in form of optical clearance transmission. An independent claim is included for a method for exchanging data between wagons of rail vehicle network.
