<p>A computer-implemented authentication method is suitable for use in situations where a users identity must be verified before a requested operation is performed. In assessing the authorisation of the user 1, the current location of a device such as a mobile phone 3 or tablet computer known to be associated with the user 1 is determined. If the location falls within a pre-defined, designated geographical area 4a then the operation is completed, otherwise it fails. In use, a customer 1 makes a purchase in an on-line store via a retailer's web site 2, and enters his card details. The invention software extracts that data and feeds it to the retailer's virtual terminal 8. Having completed the authentication process which may also include the entry of a pre-stored PIN, password or access code, the formatted transaction is passed to the issuing bank 7 and funds transferred.</p> |
