A pedestrian / cyclist protection device for partially covering a vehicle windscreen The invention relates to a safety system 10 for a passenger vehicle, the safety system comprising: at least one receptacle 14 in a roof 12 of the vehicle; at least one covering element 20 being movable from a closed position in which at least a portion of the receptacle is covered by the covering element into at least one open position in which the portion is uncovered; at least one energy absorber 18 being movable from a stowage position into at least one protective position by moving the covering element from the closed position into the open position, the energy absorber being stowed and preloaded within the receptacle in the stowage position and held therein by means of the covering element in its closed position, wherein at least a portion 22 of a windshield 24 of the passenger vehicle is covered by the energy absorber in the protective position. The energy absorber may comprise an elastomeric honeycomb material, and may be compressed in its storage position. The energy absorber may be attached to the covering element, the latter pivoting to the open position.
