PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a high purity micro carbon fiber having high productivity and high probability of no damage on surfaces of the carbon fiber, and a micro carbon fiber produced by the method. SOLUTION: The micro carbon fiber produced by feeding a mixture gas comprising CO and H<SB>2</SB>onto a catalyst for reaction is highly purified by washing the micro carbon fiber with an aqueous organic carboxylic acid solution.
