A runflat device 2 for a vehicle tyre is a ring comprising a flexible member, preferably a chain of segments 4, which may be plastic and of substantially identical construction, whose ends are connected by a link comprising a rigid member (36, Figure 3), which is adjustable to forcibly expand the ring diameter. Segments 4 may be linked by tensioning cables 6 running in guide slots 18 integral with or attached to the segments. Runflat device 2 may be encased in a plastic sleeve 8. Device 2 is preferably inflexible in a direction perpendicular to the tyre circumference to ensure proper alignment during fitting. Also disclosed is a method of fitting device 2 involving partially coiling device 2, inserting it into a tyre and expanding the ring to locate it against the inside of the tyre. |
