A vehicle tracking device (2, fig. 1) receives, stores and transmits GPS (or GLONASS) positional information in real-time or at regular intervals to a remote device 40 (e.g. a smartphone) via a cellular GSM or satellite communication network. Accuracy of the GPS positional information means that the location of the vehicle can only be tracked to an area R1. The tracking device has a second beacon configured to transmit RF wireless signals such as Wi-Fi (tm) or Bluetooth (tm) within the area R1, allowing the remote device 40 to home in on and to accurately locate the device to within a smaller area R2. Short range location determination is possible by detecting the strength or the direction of the wireless signal. The remote device 40 can download operating software for determining the short range location. |
