In the process of reducing metallic carboxylates with hydrogen, without the addition of a catalyst, as described in Specifications 562,609 and 562,610, high yields of saturated primary alcohol are obtained by using mixtures of the corresponding soaps of zinc and chromium. Reaction conditions are as in the Specifications referred to. In an example, zinc and chromium soaps of coconut oil fatty acids are heated to about 240 DEG C. under a hydrogen pressure of 3500 p.s.i., the product acid washed and saponified, and the alcohol extracted. Soaps of other saturated or substantially saturated fatty acids of vegetable, animal, and marine fats and oils may be reacted similarly. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the reduction of the soaps of unsaturated fatty acids to unsaturated alcohols, in an example, zinc and chromium oleates being converted to oleyl alcohol. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 562,609 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts). |
