CREST is a test which measures the rate of individual letter recognition and can differentiate between reading difficulties caused by binocular instability and amblyopia by comparing the subjects' rate of character recognition using two different fonts, one at high contrast and one at a lower intermediate level of contrast. The time is taken to read aloud each of two lines of 60 random individual letters of the alphabet arranged into groups of between one and seven characters (to give the illusion of normal printed text) imbedded in a paragraph of 13 lines printed in the same font with the same number of letters in each line. The high contrast characters are black N12 letters with a serif type-face (Times) and the low contrast characters are teal N12 letters with a non-serif type-face (Gill Sans).
|
