Stable aqueous solutions of anionic surface active soapless detergents mixed with a water soluble alkali metal salt of a carboxymethyl cellulose, of a higher viscosity than that of the soapless detergent solution, are obtained by keeping the concentration of the soapless detergent below 8 per cent on the weight of the aqueous composition, using not less than 2 per cent of the cellulose salt and employing an alkali metal salt of a carboxy-methyl cellulose having a degree of substitution of at least 0.55 alkali carboxymethyl groups per anhydro glucose unit of cellulose and a viscosity of at least 100 centistokes in a 1 per cent solution in water at 20 DEG C. The solutions obtained can be used less wastefully than the ordinary solutions of anionic soapless detergents which are of low viscosity. Anionic surface-active soapless detergents specified comprise the sodium salts of higher alkyl sulphates such as sodium "Lorol" (R.T.M.) sulphate, "Teepol X" (R.T.M.), and "Halvopow LMX" (R.T.M.), and the sodium salts of alkyl aryl sulphonates such as "Santomerse D" (R.T.M.). |
