A communication system comprises a controller node and a base station connected to a core network via at least one communication link (i.e. a backhaul link). Typically individual base stations assign resources based on the priority of the requests, pre-empting low priority bearers for high priority bearers. In the case where several base stations share a backhaul link this may result in the backhaul link becoming congested. Therefore, a controller node determines whether communication resources need to be released in order to support communication via the backhaul link, identifies a base station having reserved communication resources that can be released, and requests the base station to release some of its reserved communication resources whereby to support communication via the backhaul link. A base station may also receive information from the controller node representing resource usage over the backhaul link and from this information determine whether a new bearer should be admitted or rejected. |
