[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXIV] Jointing by stamping.-A spliced transmission or conveyer-belt comprises a number of tension-resisting members 12, 13 extending longitudinally in pairs therein and with the opposed ends of each longitudinally-aligned pair inserted in a ferrule 25, the members being of substantially equalized tautness in the belt by virtue of a preliminary slippage while under tension in frictional-engagement with the ferrules and being attached permanently to the ferrules in the equalized condition. Opposed ends 10, 11 of the belt to be spliced are secured in clamps 15, 16 connected by screws 20, 21 which have threads of opposite hand on opposite ends thereof so as to permit adjustment of the distance between the clamps. The overlapping ends of the members 12, 13 are cut to length at points staggered along the length of the splice so that interference does not occur when the ferrules 25 are swaged tem-. porarily by means of the hand tool 26 shown in Fig. 2. The ends of the belt are then tensioned in the clamps 15, 16 by operating the screws 20, 21 so as to effect equal tension in the members 12, 13 before being released from the clamps and applied to a press, Fig. 5, for swaging the ferrules 25 into non-slipping engagement with the members 12, 13. A support 38 locates the ferrules 25 in relation to swaging jaws 34, 35 in the press which has pistons 30, 31 connected to the jaws and operated by an explosive cartridge fired by a pin 37. The latter operation may be replaced or supplemented by welding, brazing, or soldering the ferrules to the members 12, 13. The belt is then tensioned and applied between the heated platens 40, 41 of a press, Fig. 7, where the members 12, 13 are covered by a rubber or rubber-like material, with or without fabric reinforcing, which is vulcanized to the similar material of the belt by means of pressure applied by pistons 42. |
