The solution reacts with divalent cations liberated by the carbonates and forms a plug.

A method of treating a subterranean well, comprising the following steps: i. pumping a treatment fluid comprising from 5 wt % to 60 wt % of at least one polymer containing at least one carboxylate functional group down the well during drilling; ii. allowing the treatment fluid to enter voids in a subterranean formation containing carbonate minerals; and iii. reacting the treatment fluid with the carbonate minerals and associated divalent cations, thereby forming a plug, characterized in that the reaction to form the plug does not require the presence of a crosslinking agent.
