PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress a change in retardation due to the temperature change of a liquid crystal display element.SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display element is configured such that liquid crystal 101 is arranged between alignment layers 116 formed by oblique evaporation. When the elastic constant in a spray direction of the liquid crystal is defined as K11, and the elastic constant in a bent direction of the liquid crystal is defined as K33, and a ratio K11/K33 of the elastic constants when the temperature of the liquid crystal is 25°C is defined as (a), and the ratio K11/K33 of the elastic constants when the temperature of the liquid crystal is 50°C is defined as b, and a difference a-b between the ratios (a) and b is defined as α, and a pre-tilt angle of the molecule of the liquid crystal applied by the alignment films is defined as &phgr;, the liquid crystal satisfies such conditions that α≤0.02 and &phgr;≥5 degrees. |
