Rubber articles are produced by compounding rubber latex with sulphur, a vulcanizing accelerator comprising a metal salt of an N-substituted dithiocarbamic acid and a small proportion of an amine, adding a gelling agent such as sodium silicofluoride, shaping and gelling and then vulcanizing the rubber. The dithiocarbamates are preferably water insoluble such as zinc diethyl dithiocarbamate used alone or with zinc pentamethylene dithiocarbamate, zinc phenylmethyl dithiocarbamate, zinc lupetidine dithiocarbamate, mercaptobenzthiazole, or selenium diethyl dithiocarbamate; although water soluble dithiocarbamates such as sodium pentamethylene dithiocarbamate, sodium dimethyl dithiocarbamate or sodium dithiocarbamate may also be used. The amine must be a true amine, and not an addition product of ammonia such as hexamethylene tetramine, but can include substances such as benzylidine dipiperidine which liberate piperidine on heating. The amine is used in a proportion of 2 to 25 per cent. by weight of the dithiocarbamate. In examples, the amine used is diphenylguanidine, symmetrical triphenylguanidine, benzylcyclohexylamine, triethyltrimethylenetriamine, diethylamine, dicyclohexylamine, triethanolamine, tetraethylene pentamine or benzylidine dipiperidine.
|
