PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst for a solid polymer fuel cell excellent in initial activity (initial power generation characteristics), and a method for producing the catalyst for a solid polymer fuel cell.SOLUTION: The present invention relates to a catalyst for a solid polymer fuel cell, in which catalyst particles comprising platinum, cobalt and magnesium are supported on a carbon powder carrier. The composition ratio (molar ratio) of platinum, cobalt and magnesium in the catalyst particles is Pt:Co:Mg=1:0.4-0.5:0.00070-0.00095. The catalyst is produced by, after having cobalt and magnesium supported by a platinum catalyst, subjecting the platinum catalyst to heat treatment and treatment for being brought into contact with an oxidizing solution. The catalyst produced in such a manner has characteristics in a peak position of a main peak appearing between 40° and 42° of 2&thetas; in X-ray diffraction analysis, and the peak position is shifted to 41.0°-41.5°. |
