PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide compositions and methods related to improving pharmacological properties, particularly permeability through the blood-brain barrier, of bioactive compounds targeting the nervous system.SOLUTION: The present invention provides a galanin-like polypeptide having the amino acid sequence of Sar-Trp-Thr-Leu-Asn-Ser-Ala-Gly-Tyr-Leu-Leu-Gly-Pro-Lys-Lys-(Lys-palm)-Lys-NH. The invention also provides an isolated polypeptide including an amino acid sequence which is at least about 90% identical to the amino acid sequence, or an amino acid sequence having one or more conservative amino acid substitutions. The invention further provides a composition having high permeability through the blood-brain barrier, the composition including a peptide having higher lipophilicity and higher basicity than the non-altered form of the peptide.
