A coating on a surface of a workpiece, wherein the coating consists of: one of a zinc alloy, an intermetallic compound, a metallic compound, or a non-metallic compound, wherein the coating is further of the kind Zn—X, wherein Zn is contained in the range of 70% by weight to less than 100% by weight of the coating,and wherein X consists of: (a) at least one of an oxidic component or a ceramic component consisting of: (i) at least one of MgO or carbide, the carbide consisting of C and at least one member selected from the group consisting of: Sn, Mg, Ca, Fe, Ni, Co, Cu, Mo, Ti, Cr, Zr, Y, La, Ce, Sc, Pr, Dy, O, N, and compounds and combinations thereof;(ii) a nitride consisting of N and at least one member selected from the group consisting of: Sn, Mg, Ca, Fe, Ni, Co, Cu, Mo, Ti, Cr, Zr, Y, La, Ce, Sc, Pr, Dy, C, O, and compounds and combinations thereof; and(iii) optionally, one or more members selected from the group consisting of Sn, Mg, Ca, Fe, Ni, Co, Cu, Mo, Ti, Cr, Zr, Y, La, Ce, Sc, Pr, Dy, C, O, N, and compounds and combinations thereof; and(b) optionally, one or more members selected from the group consisting of Sn, Mg, Ca, Fe, Ni, Co, Cu, Mo, Ti, Cr, Zr, Y, La, Ce, Sc, Pr, Dy, C, O, N, and compounds and combinations thereof; wherein Sn is contained in at least one of (i), (ii), (iii), or (b), such that Sn is present in the range of 1% to 4% by weight of the coating.
