The invention relates to a method for separating at least one metal ion or metalloid from an aqueous solution containing said at least one metal ion or metalloid, comprising steps consisting of (a) adding, into said aqueous solution, at least one surfactant and at least one chelating agent forming an organometallic complex with said at least one metal ion or metalloid; and (b) adding at least one sol-gel precursor to said solution obtained in step (a); by which means a sol-gel material containing said at least one metal ion or metalloid and a purified solution are obtained.
