The control method involves controlling an engine (20) and a traction motor (34) in a first virtual gear such that the engine speed is constant as the accelerator pedal position varies at constant vehicle speed. In response to changes in vehicle speed, both engine speed and ratio of engine speed to vehicle speed are adjusted continuously.
