A lawnmower uses thin, replaceable blades with a hardened cutting edge. Such blades are held by blade holding elements in a horizontally rotating blade assembly. The blade assembly is covered by a blade assembly guard that is only open underneath at a point where blades in the blade assembly would cut grass during normal operation. A blade assembly access panel in the upper portion of the blade assembly guard allows blades to be easily replaced.

1. A lawn mowing apparatus for cutting grass growing on a surface, comprising:
a drive mechanism; a rotatable blade assembly connected to the drive mechanism comprising:
two or more rotors configured to rotate about the same axis; and a blade assembly guard configured to partially enclose the rotatable blade assembly, wherein:
the rotatable blade assembly configured to be rotatably driven by said drive assembly about an axis substantially parallel to a surface to be cut, configured to hold a plurality of replaceable blades such that each of the plurality of replaceable blades is configured to be held substantially tangentially to each of the two or more rotors such that a cutting edge of each of the plurality of replaceable blades is oriented in a direction of rotation of the two or more rotors, and each replaceable blade being no more than 0.075 inches thick; and the blade assembly guard defines blade chamber.
