A thyristor startup device (100) is provided with the following: a converter (1) that converts AC power supplied by an AC power supply (e1) to DC power; a DC inductor (3) that acts to smooth the DC current; an inverter (2) that converts DC power provided from the converter (1) via the DC inductor (3) into AC power and supplies said AC power to a synchronous motor (4); a gate-pulse generation circuit (40) that generates gate pulses to provide to thyristors in the converter (1) and the inverter (2); a control unit (20) that controls the current outputted by the converter (1) so as to make the DC current flowing through the DC inductor (3) equal to a current command value, thereby setting a phase control angle for the gate pulses supplied to the thyristor in the converter (1); and an abnormality detection unit (50) that compares a detected DC current to the current command value and uses the result of said comparison to determine the presence or absence of an abnormality in the gate pulses.
