The surgical instrument has handle portion (14) and tool portion (32). The handle portion has drive (26) for the tool portion. The tool portion has distal section having drive tool (52), and proximal portion (34) connectable with the handle portion and case (60) having coding elements. A sensor element (46) detects presence of coding elements and sends sensor signal to actyivate drive. The sensor element interacts with coding elements in each of the relative orientations of the tool portion and the handle portion.
