The internal combustion engine has an intake system (10) which is provided to provide a cylinder (11) with air, and an exhaust camshaft adjuster (12) which is provided to adjust a phase position of an exhaust camshaft (13) for controlling an exhaust valve (14). A controlling- or regulating unit (15) is provided with a cylinder protection function which is provided to adjust the phase position of the exhaust camshaft for direct recirculation of gases from the cylinder in the intake system after a cold-start phase as a function of a triggering condition. An independent claim is included for a method for controlling or regulating an internal combustion engine.
