Methods and systems for feature-based registration of patient medical images

A method for registration of a patient image 18 to a template image 16 comprising an atlas and a number of reference features 14, comprising the steps of: extracting features describing intensity patterns in said patient image; identifying features in the template image which correspond to features in the patient image; and deriving a transform for improving alignment between the features of the patient image and the template image. The images may be from different modalities and the method may be applied to registration of images of two different patients.
