A method performed by a computing device comprises receiving event identification data having a first in-band data pattern and metadata associated with the first in-band data pattern. While presenting a multimedia content stream to a viewer, a second in-band data pattern is determined from a portion of an in-band data stream of the multimedia content stream, and the metadata of the event identification data is processed in response to determining that the first in-band data pattern matches the second in-band data pattern. The invention also comprises a computer-readable storage medium, one or more computing devices, and a digital video recording device.
