A turbocharger system for an internal combustion engine, comprising a variable geometry turbine (VGT), an actuator (256, fig.4) having a rotating shaft (257, fig.3), an angular position sensor (259, fig.5) coupled to the shaft, and an electronic control unit (ECU) to execute a learning procedure (605). The learning procedure provides for the ECU to: operate (610) the actuator to rotate the rotating shaft ; sample (615) a signal generated by the position sensor; use (620) the sampled values of the signal to calculate a variation rate of the signal during the rotation of the rotating shaft; identify (625) a sensor fold-back, if the signal variation rate changes sign; correct (630) the signal values sampled after the identification of the sensor fold-bade using an offset value; stop (635) the learning procedure, when the signal variation rate is zero, and identify (640) the last corrected signal value before the stopping of the learning procedure, as a reference signal value indicative of the mechanical-end-stop position of the VGT. |
