The method involves providing separator (12) in the downstream of a separating device (6) which classifies the milled substance, while using grinding device for grinding the substance. The first parameter and second parameter characteristics for the operation of the crushing mill (2) is determined. The derivative of the first parameter is determined according to the second parameter, so that the sign of the derivative is determined. The crushing mill is open and/or closed-loop controlled in dependence of the sign of the derivative. An independent claim is included for the crushing mill.
