Class 87(ii) Tubes or rods 10, Fig. 1, (plan view) are fed in end-to-end abutting relationship through a die 15 where a tube 45, Fig. 5, of plastic material is extruded on to the tubes &c. 10 to form a wear-resistant coating thereon. The tubes &c. 10 move through the die faster than the plastic material, the latter being thereby stretched and caused to adhere tenaciously to the former. The bare tubes &c. 10 are advanced to the die along support rollers 12 by a roller 50 driven by electric motor 51, and the coated tubes &c. are removed on rollers 16. A generator 60 supplies steam to chambers 57, 58 in the extruder. Specification 654,291 is referred to. The coated pipes, rods &c. may be used as stanchions or hand rails in passenger vehicles.
