Overload protection

An overload protection device in combination with a prime mover and gearbox transmission supplies torque through a gearbox transmission to a load. An input shaft with is driven by the prime mover and rotates therewith. An external spline on the input shaft mates with an input gear having an internal spline. Upon overload of the gearbox transmission, the input shaft fractures an annular groove in the input shaft. A bushing prevents travel of the portion of the input shaft which is driven by the prime mover and which continues to spin after the fracture.

1. An overload protection device in combination with a prime mover and gearbox transmission supplying torque through said gearbox transmission to a load, comprising:
an input shaft; said input shaft includes a bore therethrough; said input shaft includes a key for coupling with and to said prime mover and for rotation therewith; said input shaft includes an external spline; said prime mover transmitting torque to said input shaft; said gearbox transmission includes an input gear; said input gear includes a bore therein; said bore of said input gear includes an internal spline, said bore of said input gear includes a shoulder therein; a bushing, said bushing resides in said bore of said gear and engages said shoulder of said bore; said input shaft includes an annular groove; said input gear of said gearbox transmission drives a planetary gear system which, in turn, supplies power to said load; and, upon overload of said gearbox transmission, said input shaft breaks at said annular groove.
