The embodiments described herein provide for immunogenic portions of Streptococcus pneumoniae surface protein A and surface protein C lacking alpha helical structure.

An immunogenic composition comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or an adjuvant and at least one purified, immunogenic, recombinant polypeptide of Streptococcus pneumoniae surface protein A (PspA) consisting of SEQ. ID, NO:1, SEQ ID NO: 2, SEQ ID NO: 4, SEQ ID NO:6, SEQ ID NO:7, SEQ ID NO:45, amino acid residues 159-267 of SEQ ID NO:20, or amino acid residues 159-263 of SEQ ID NO:18; wherein said polypeptide lacks an alpha-helical region of the full length PspA; and wherein said polypeptide is immunogenic against S. pneumoniae.
