Lightweight control-plane signaling for aggregation devices in a network

Providing a label is disclosed. A first message is transmitted to an access device where the first message includes a set of available labels. A second message is received from the access device where the second message includes a label from the set of available labels selected to be used by the access device. The set of available labels is updated to account for the label selected by the access device.

1. A method, comprising:
sending, by an aggregation device comprising a processor, a first message to an access device, wherein the first message identifies a set of available labels; receiving, by the aggregation device, a second message from the access device, wherein the second message comprises at least a first field identifying a label of the set of available labels selected by the access device for a flow, a second field comprising at least information associated with a quality of service of the flow, and a third field identifying a status of a device associated with the access device; and updating, by the aggregation device, a record of the set of available labels based on the label identified by the second message to yield an updated set of available labels.
