A liquid crystal display according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention includes: a first substrate; a pixel electrode disposed on the first substrate; a first alignment layer disposed on the first substrate and the pixel electrode; a second substrate facing the first substrate; a common electrode disposed on the second substrate; a second alignment layer disposed on the second substrate and the common electrode; and a liquid crystal layer disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate, wherein the common electrode has a plurality of cutouts having a cross shape, and when viewing the first substrate and the second substrate upward, the edge of the cutout is protruded from the edge of the pixel electrode.

1. A liquid crystal display, comprising:
a first substrate; a pixel electrode disposed on the first substrate and comprising at least one opening; a second substrate facing the first substrate; a common electrode disposed on the second substrate; and a liquid crystal layer disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate, wherein the common electrode comprises a plurality of openings having a cross shape, wherein, in plan view, the edges of each opening protrude beyond edges of the pixel electrode, and wherein the opening of the pixel electrode is formed at a position where two edges of the pixel electrode meet, and the opening extends from the position where two edges of the pixel electrode meet toward the center portion of the opening of the common electrode.
