Class 40 (4) [Also in Group XL (c)] In an electric signal transmission system including a number of spaced unattended repeaters, the gain of the repeaters is sharply peaked at a predetermined frequency or narrow band of frequencies characteristic of each repeater, so that the performance of individual repeaters can be ascertained from current, e.g. noise current measurements made at the frequencies of the individual planks. A system working over a submarine cable in which the repeater power is fed over the cable is described with reference to Fig. 1 (not shown), and includes repeaters, Fig. 2, in which a crystal 115 is connected to form a sharply tuned resonant circuit across the feedback circuit to decrease the feedback over a very narrow frequency band. Power is fed over the cable core 8 to the heaters of valves 60-62 which are in series and the total drop across the heaters is used for H.T. purposes. Equalisation is effected in the input and output circuits and the repeater gain characteristic is shaped by inter-stage inductors and capacitors, and by the tuned circuits across a resistor 76 in the feedback circuit. In further embodiments, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the crystal is connected in the main amplifier path and across the secondary of the input transformer respectively and the use of tuned circuits, mechanical resonators and cavity resonators as an alternative to the crystal is also mentioned. In the.testing system disclosed the peaks which may have amplitudes up to 25 db. are spaced at 100 cycles intervals in a 4,000 cycle band at the upper end of the frequency spectrum and a narrow-band noise measuring device such as the heterodyne frequency analyser disclosed in U.S.A. Specification 1,976,481 is used at the testing station to determine the performance of each repeater, which in conjunction with load-gain measurements on individual peaks may be used to determine the performance of individual stages. Test oscillators may be used to send currents of the individual peak frequencies and the go and return lines may be looped by a filter passing the test band so that all testing may be effected at one terminal. Circuit arrangements of the crystal in the feedback path are varied according to the frequency band available for testing so that phase changes arising from the peaking circuit do not lead to instability.
