In a method for operating a volatile memory device, a first initialization operation for the volatile memory device is performed based on a boot code received from an external memory controller. The boot code is stored in an internal register. If the first initialization operation is not normally performed, the boot code stored in the internal register is read based on a first signal received from an external memory controller. A second initialization operation for the volatile memory device is performed based on the boot code read from the internal register.
