1. A method for antenatally assessing fetal lung maturity, including the steps of:
collecting a sample of maternal serum; obtaining cell free messenger RNA (mRNA) from the sample of maternal serum; determining a level of cell free lysophospholipid acyltransferase 1 (LPCAT1) mRNA in the sample of maternal serum; comparing the level of cell free LPCAT1 mRNA in the sample of maternal serum to a reference standard relating a level of cell free LPCAT1 mRNA to a level of fetal lung maturity; determining the level of lung maturity of a fetus corresponding to the level of cell free LPCAT1 mRNA in the sample; and assessing the level of lung maturity of a fetus.
