In resuscitation apparatus means for automatically filling the lungs with oxygen and emptying them is combined with means for supplying the oxygen to the patient for normal respiration. Oxygen from either cylinder 1 passes through a pressure regulator 5 to a changeover cock 6 which, for resuscitation, directs it to a jet 7 in a venturi tube 8, the forward side of which is connected to a valve 10. A pipe 19 connects the suction side of the venturi to a chamber 18, having one face 17 formed as a pressure-sensitive diaphragm, this being connected through a snap over toggle mechanism 15 to the stem 9 of the valve 10. The patient's face mask 14 is connected through a tube 12 to the upper side of valve 10 and also to the chamber 18. When the valve is in the position shown, oxygen issuing from jet 7 passes to atmosphere through outlet 11 and in so doing creates an increasing vacuum in the chamber 18 and the face mask 14 until the diaphragm 17 is drawn in sufficiently to trip the toggle lever 15 and reverse the valve 10. The outlet 11 is thereby closed and gas from the jet 7 can pass to the lower tube 12 and build up a pressure in the mask 14 and chamber 18 until the diaphragm again reverses the valve, the cycle continuing repeatedly. When the patient breathes normally the cock 6 is set to direct the oxygen to the pipe 20, while cutting off the jet 7. The gas now flows through a valve 25 controlled by a diaphragm 23, so as to be opened at each inspiration of the patient. A non-return exhaling valve 26 is used under these conditions.
