The method involves directly injecting a predetermined amount of gaseous fuel through two temporally spaced insufflation (20) into a cylinder by using an injector within a work cycle of a piston. The insufflation is performed within a range from including 420 degree crank angle up to 90 degrees of crank angle, before top dead center of the piston. The insufflation are performed in an intake stroke or a compression stroke of the piston.
